What is palliative care?

Palliative care aims to help people who have a serious illness. In general, this type of care emphasizes symptom relief and quality of life. However, you can have palliative care alongside curative treatments if you wish.

The Prestige Clinicians LLC team provides palliative care in several different settings, including your own home, a nursing home, a hospital, and an assisted living facility. Palliative care can make life much easier for the person who is sick and those who love them.

What diseases does palliative care help with?

Palliative care can help people with a number of different conditions, syndromes, and diseases, including:

  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Non-Alzheimer’s dementia
  • Cancer
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Kidney failure
  • Liver failure
  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
  • Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Sickle cell anemia
  • Stroke

Palliative care might be helpful in a number of other situations as well. If you have any serious illness, discuss palliative care with the Prestige Clinicians LLC team to find out whether it’s the right choice for you.

Are palliative care and hospice care the same?

Palliative care and hospice care share many similarities and they’re often discussed in the same situations. However, they’re distinctly different approaches to medical care.

The main difference is that hospice care is for people who have a life-limiting illness, typically with an expected remaining life span of fewer than six months. In contrast, anyone with a serious illness can receive palliative care.

Another big difference is that hospice care is exclusively focused on symptom relief, comfort, and maximizing quality of life. People in hospice care have decided not to pursue curative treatment, or they have chosen to stop curative treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation.

While palliative care focuses on the same goals as hospice care, people in palliative care have the option of starting or continuing curative treatments alongside their comfort care.

Depending on individual needs, patients can transition from palliative care to hospice care, or vice versa, as needs or situations change.

Prestige Clinicians LLC provides compassionate, respectful, and highly individualized palliative care based on your family’s specific situation. To learn more, call the office, or click on the provided appointment scheduling tool now.
